Nick Schmaltz scored twice, goaltender Karel Vejmelka made 34 saves, and the Arizona Coyotes won for the second time in as many meetings over the Seattle Kraken, 5-2 on Wednesday night at Climate Pledge Arena.
The Kraken chased the Coyotes all night after falling behind in the first four minutes of play, on a Phil Kessel goal following a defensive zone turnover.
A snap shot off the rush by Schmaltz on Philipp Grubauer put the Coyotes up 2-0 with 5:09 left in the second period before Colin Blackwell responded 16 seconds into the third period. But an issue that has plagued the Kraken for much of this season, the "response" goal, came back to haunt them again when Anton Stralman buried a rebound 1:36 later for a 3-1 lead.
Calle Jarnkrok's eighth goal of the season, a backdoor finish from Yanni Gourde, put the Kraken down 3-2 with 4:08 left, but back-to-back empty netters from Alex Galchenyuk and Schmaltz sealed the game.
The Kraken return Friday in a brief road trip stop, facing the Anaheim Ducks, 7pm at Honda Center (950 KJR / Kraken Audio Network).
