The Seattle Seahawks have acquired cornerback Sidney Jones in a trade from the Jacksonville Jaguars ahead of tomorrow's roster cut deadline.
Jones, a former University of Washington standout, was sent to Seattle in exchange for a 2022 sixth-round draft pick, per multiple reports. Jones is the second cornerback the Seahawks have acquired in trade over the last two weeks. Seattle also brought in John Reid in a trade from the Houston Texans last week. That trade was in exchange for a conditional seventh-round draft pick.
Jones popped his Achilles tendon during his pro day workout for scouts at Washington in March 2017, which led to him missing all but one game during his rookie season with the Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles selected Jones in the second round of the 2017 NFL Draft despite the injury. However, he was released by the team after three seasons having never gotten to the level they had hoped he'd be able to reach after recovering from injury.
The Jaguars picked Jones up last year after his release from Philadelphia and he appeared in nine games for the team with six starts. He had his best season of his career, including two interceptions and a career-high 26 tackles in Jacksonville. The Jaguars re-signed him on a one-year deal this offseason before trading him to Seattle.
The Seahawks have been a bit thin on depth throughout the preseason because of injuries. D.J. Reed did not play in the preseason and missed two weeks of practice to a groin injury. Damarious Randall missed a similar amount of time to the same injury. Rookie cornerback Tre Brown was out this last week with a sore knee, which helped lead to the acquisition of Reid from Houston.
Seattle could get their draft pick back from the Texans, in theory, if Reid doesn't meet the requirements of the deal, which could be games played, snaps played, etc.
Jones' acquisition should help Seattle's depth at the spot alongside D.J. Reed, Ahkello Witherspoon, Tre Flowers and Tre Brown.
