Report: Geno Smith set to sign with Seahawks

Seattle Seahawks v Los Angeles Chargers

The Seattle Seahawks appear to be adding another veteran to their quarterback room.

According to Jordan Raanan of ESPN.com, former New York Jets, New York Giants and Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Geno Smith is expected to sign with the Seahawks this week. Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network added that Smith is set to visit Seattle on Wednesday.

Smith would join Paxton Lynch and Taryn Christion as quarterbacks on the Seahawks roster behind Russell Wilson. Lynch signed with the Seahawks shortly after the season concluded. Christion was an undrafted free agent signing out of South Dakota State that took part in the team's rookie mini-camp last weekend.

Smith was a second-round pick of the Jets in 2013 and made 29 starts in 30 games played over his first two seasons with the team. However, Smith had his jaw broken by teammate IK Enemkepali in a fight prior to the 2015. Ryan Fitzpatrick took over the starting job in Smith's absence. He would start just one game over his final two years with the Jets and would sustain a torn ACL in that start.

Smith completed 59.7 percent of his passes for 2,525 yards with 13 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in his last season as a starter in 2014.

He signed with the Giants as a backup to Eli Manning in 2017 and appeared in two games with one start, which snapped Manning's consecutive starts streak at 210 and prompted backlash from Giants' fans. Manning did not miss the game because of injury.

Smith appeared in five games last season as a backup to Philip Rivers with the Chargers. He tossed just four passes on the year with one completion.

Smith would bring much-needed competition to backup quarterback spot should he sign with the Seahawks. Lynch - a former first-round pick - flamed out with the Denver Broncos after only two seasons. He appeared in five games with four starts, completing 61.7 percent of his passes for 792 yards with four touchdowns and four interceptions.

Christion struggled in an admittedly tough setting during rookie mini-camp. He was a dual-threat quarterback at South Dakota State, amassing over 1,500 career rushing yards in addition to 11,535 passing yards with 104 touchdowns and 34 interceptions.

Update: The Seahawks waived Christion along with tight end Mik'Quan Deane on Monday to open roster spots for the addition of defensive tackle Al Woods and, presumably, Smith.
