Mariners trade Alex Colomé to White Sox for catcher Omar Narvàez

The Seattle Mariners have traded right-handed reliever Alex Colomé to the Chicago White Six for 26-year old catcher Omar Narvàez.

Colomé appeared in 47 games for Seattle last season, posting a 5-0 record and a 2.53 ERA. The former Rays closer moved into a setup role in front of Edwin Diaz with the Mariners and struck out 49 batters in 46 1/3 innings pitched.

Narvàez has spent parts of three seasons in the major leagues with the White Sox. The left-handed hitting catcher played in 97 games for Chicago last season, batting .275 with nine home runs and 30 RBIs in 280 at-bats.

“Omar has quietly developed into one of the tougher outs among catchers in MLB, his contact and on-base skills are welcome additions to our lineup,” Mariners G.M. Jerry Dipoto said in a statement. “The fact that he is also under club control through 2022 made him a great fit for our club.”

The Mariners acquired Colomé and outfielder Denard Span in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays last May. Seattle sent pitchers Andrew Moore and Tommy Romero to the Rays in an attempt to bolster a major league club that got off to a hot start.

With the recent trade of catcher Mike Zunino and outfielder Guillermo Heredia to the Rays in exchange for outfielder Mallex Smith and minor league outfielder Jake Fraley, the Mariners needed to add help to the catcher position.

Narvàez signed with the Rays when he was 16 out of Venezuela. The White Sox acquired him in the minor league Rule 5 draft in 2013. He made his major league debut with the White Sox in 2016, appearing in 34 games and batting .267 with one home run and 10 RBIs. In 2017, he played in 90 games with a .277 average in 295 at-bats with two home runs and 14 RBIs.
