Doug Baldwin could miss couple of weeks, Keenan Reynolds promoted

Seattle Seahawks v Denver Broncos

RENTON -- Wide receiver Doug Baldwin could miss a couple of weeks due to a right MCL injury sustained in Sunday's season opener against the Denver Broncos.

Baldwin was injured on a running play when Denver defensive tackle Domata Peko rolled up onto the back of Baldwin's right leg from behind. Baldwin got up and tried to get off the field before going down again in the Seahawks' backfield. He tried to return to the game before leaving for good.

"It could be a couple weeks," head coach Pete Carroll said. "We'll find out. He's as tough as you get and we'll need to wait. He's getting the science back and we'll find out in the next couple of days what that means."

While ESPN.com reported that Baldwin's injury is a Grade 2 MCL sprain, Carroll didn't confirm that diagnose specifically but did acknowledge it is an MCL issue.

"He'll be able to get back from this. He'll come back from it. We've got to see it through. It's really early in the year. We've got to take care of him and look after him first and foremost and then we'll only do what he's capable of doing with the OK of the docs too."

Carroll said the Seahawks had promoted wide receiver Keenan Reynolds from their practice squad to fill the role vacated by Baldwin's upcoming absence. Tyler Lockett played all but one offensive snap for Seattle against the Broncos because of the injury to Baldwin, including an increased role specifically in the slot.

Reynolds filled the Baldwin role through much of the preseason as Seattle's top receiver sat out due to an issue with his left knee. He did not make the team's 53-man roster out of camp but did re-sign to the practice squad for the start of the season.

"He's played the same spot that Doug's played so he'll give us at least a next guy in if we need him for this weekend," Carroll said.

Reynolds - a former quarterback at the Naval Academy - was a sixth round pick of the Baltimore Ravens in 2016 and was with the team through the 2017 preseason before being released. He spent time on the practice squad of the Washington Redskins late last season but has not appeared in a regular season game.

Seattle waived safety Shalom Luani to clear a spot for Reynolds on its active roster. Luani was acquired by the Seahawks in a trade with the Oakland Raiders over cutdown weekend. Seattle sent a seventh-round pick to Oakland in exchange for Luani.

The Seahawks also signed cornerback Simeon Thomas and wide receiver Malik Turner to the practice squad and released defensive tackle Frank Herron.

Thomas was picked up off waivers from the Cleveland Browns over cutdown weekend, but was waived to create a roster spot for the return of safety Earl Thomas from his hold out. Turner spent time with Seattle during training camp.
