NFL Network's Ian Rapoport: Surprised if Kris Richard runs defense

NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport joined The Ian Furness Show today, explaining the reaction around the league with the firing of offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, offensive line coach Tom Cable, and if defensive coordinator Kris Richard will remain in Seattle.

Rapoport said he would be surprised if defensive coordinator Kris Richard is running the defense next year.

"I was told he was not fired,  I know there were some reports he was fired, but just that he was told you're allowed to seek other employment. What happens if he's not able to get another job? I don't know, probably would be moved out and hire a new defensive coordinator and even have an advisory role. I know Pete Carroll doesn't like to fire people, really would just like them to find jobs themselves, but would be surprised if (Richard) is running the defense next year.

Last Friday, Richard interviewed for the Colts head coaching vacancy.

On the offense, a possible replacement for Darrell Bevell is current Colts quarterbacks coach Brian Schottenheimer. He was also the former offensive coordinator for the New York Jets, St. Louis Rams, and at the University of Georgia. General Manager John Schneider worked with Schottenheimer's father, Marty, under the Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Redskins.  Rapoport said he expects Schottenheimer to interview for the offensive coordinator position.

"Pete Carroll and John Schneider both like and respect (Schottenheimer), both had relationships with his father.  He's not a sexy a name, he's been an offensive coordinator for a long time with the Jets, for a successful Jets team for a long time, and same thing with the Rams. Was a quarterbacks coach this year, so obviously took a step back, but what he did with Jacoby Brissett was impressive. I don't think he's the only one they'll interview, but he's definitely a guy I would expect to have an interview.
