Mariners acquire first baseman Ryon Healy from A's

Seattle Mariners v Oakland Athletics

Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto has made his first, and probably not last, significant trade of the baseball offseason.

Seattle acquired right-handed first baseman Ryon Healy from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for right-handed relief pitcher Emilio Pagan and 17-year old infielder Alexander Compos.

Healy, 25, batted .271 with 25 home runs and 78 RBIs in 149 games for Oakland last season. While primarily at designated hitter in the A's lineup, he also played 39 games at first base and 34 games at third base last season. He hit .314 against left-handed pitchers with a .526 slugging percentage as well.

"He's had a pretty good start to a career for a right-hand power hitter," Dipoto said. "Young guy with power, with five years of control ahead of him and just under 900 career plate appearances he's already put up close to 40 homers and been an above average offensive producer.

"After going to year-to-year for such a long time here with first base as a question mark, we're hopeful that Ryon can step in and solve a good deal of that problem. He's a good offensive player and gives us that kind of right-handed power element. One of the things we joked about internally is just keeping him from doing damage against us probably makes us a better team."

In 29 career games against the Mariners, Healy has hit .287 with six home runs and 14 RBIs along with a .381 OPS.

Healy is under club control through the 2022 season, giving the Mariners a cheap, long-term option at first base for the next several years. He doesn't even become arbitration eligible until after the 2019 season.

Pagan, 26, posted a 2-3 record with a 3.22 ERA in 34 appearances for Seattle last season. He allowed 18 earned runs in 50.1 innings with 56 strikeouts and only eight walks allowed.

"He had a great year (last year) and I told him that on the telephone," Dipoto said of Pagan. "In addition to the great job he did on the mound, he's a wonderful human being. ... We couldn't be more thankful for the contributions he made here and hopefully Ryon continues that forward."

Compos signed with Seattle as an international free agent on July 4, 2016. He began his professional career last season with the Dominican Summer League Mariners affiliate, batting .290 with 37 runs scored, 10 doubles, two home runs, 26 RBIs, 41 walks and seven stolen bases in 59 games.
