Jean Segura placed on 10-day disabled list

SAFECO FIELD -- The Mariners have placed shortstop Jean Segura on the 10-day disabled list after straining in right hamstring in Monday's home opener against the Houston Astros.

The team has added infielder Mike Freeman to their roster and designated left-handed pitcher Paul Fry for assignment to clear a roster spot.

"Not bad at all. It's a mild strain," manager Scott Servais said. "I really thought yesterday that he was just going to miss a couple days. I think trying to be very (cautious), be out ahead of this thing as much as anything.

"I full expect he'll be back and ready to go at the end of 10 days based on what I've been told. It's disappointing. He's off to a great start. We certainly love what he brings to our lineup and our team and he wants to be in there, but this is probably the right thing to do."

Segura was injured early in Monday's game. He remained in the lineup through his second at-bat and the end of the third inning before being replaced by Taylor Motter for the remainder of the game.

Freeman was not on the team's 40-man roster, necessitating the move for Fry to be designated for assignment. He'll be in uniform for Seattle's game tonight against the Astros.

Segura has had a strong start to the season at the plate, batting .313 with a home run, three RBI, six runs scored and three stolen bases.

The disabled list stint is a minimum of 10 days this season for the first time. The number has been reduced from 15 days in the past. Segura will be eligible to return to the team on April 21.

Motter replaced Segura in the lineup Tuesday night and will get the majority of playing time in Segura's absence. Jarrod Dyson moves into the leadoff spot in the order.
